Earl Sweatshirt – “Home”
If you’re unfamiliar with the Earl saga I’ll fill you in a little. Back in 2010 a mixtape surfaced on the Odd Future Tumblr credited to Earl Sweatshirt, it remains probably the best thing anybody in the crew (yawn, including Tyler’s - “Yonkers”) has ever done (I don’t think you can still download it for free since the Tyler gang went legit but I’m pretty sure you can find it on a torrent somewhere – though of course we’d never condone such a reckless and selfish act as illegally downloading a once free mixtape, just think of the poor starving artiste for the love of God!) Anyway, it was so good everyone wanted to learn more about this about this 16 year old rapper but lo and behold, nothing, as quickly as he arrived on the scene, he seemed to have disappeared.
The rest of Ken Dodd Future kept tight lipped as to his whereabouts and rumors of him being incarcerated inevitably started circulating until one day when it transpired that Thebe’s (that’s his real name by the way) Mum was, probably unsurprisingly, kind of disgusted that her Son was writing songs about mutilating Police and the rest, so she packed him of to a young person’s rehabilitation camp in Samoa where he has remained to this day.
Until now that is, as on February 8th a new Earl Twitter account popped up along with a YouTube video containing a small section of a new tune and the man himself proclaiming that once he received 50,000 followers he would release the tune in full, and with the internet being the internet we had a new Earl song within a couple of hours that you can listen to following the link below. Personally I think it sounds as though he’s just spent the last two years listening to old MF Doom tapes, but that’s really not a criticism – especially when you compare it to Tyler the Creator’s bland, unimaginative and ultimately disappointing offering from last year. Let’s hope there’s a tape on the way!
